But for Anna Bay sisters Alessia and Lilliana Chapman, 5, and Corlette sisters Emily and Chloe Hodges, 5, having their twin beside them will make the transition a little easier.
The two sets of twins will begin kindergarten at St Michael’s Primary School on Thursday.
The girls are four in a cohort of 40 that will begin kindergarten at the Nelson Bay school this week.
“It’s always exciting to start the beginning of the year,” St Michael’s Primary School principal Helen Bourne said.
“It’s a wonderful time for families and students. For some it is an adjustment, but for others, they’ve waited what feels like a long time and are excited to start school.”
To help ease the transition into primary school, kindergarten students are buddied up with a year 6 student.
“The year 6 students are there to support their mini mate in the first couple of days,” Ms Bourne said.
For Alessia, Lilliana, Emily and Chloe, the transition is expected to be a little easier.
Not only do the girls have the support of their twin, but of their older sisters.
Alessia and Lilliana’s sister Carla, 8, and Emily and Chloe’s sister Lily, 8, also attends St Michael’s.
Coincidentally, Carla and Lily are good friends.
“Our twins have only really just met but we hope they become friends like Carla and Lily, too,” Vanessa Fedele, Alessia and Lilliana’s mother, said.
Ms Fedele said seeing her two youngest children start school was “emotional” but they were ready for the next step.
“They like to be stimulated,” she said. “They’re ready for school.”
Summa Hodges, Emily and Chloe’s mother, said her girls were “really excited” to begin school.
“It’s going to be quiet at home without them but school is going to be really good for them,” Mrs Hodges said.
“They have Lily to look after them. She’s very protective of her younger sisters.”
Most students will begin going back to school on Wednesday.
