Medowie Gymnastics is one of four nominees up for 2018 Small Club of the Year, with the winner set to be announced at Gymnastics NSW’s annual awards night in Sydney on Saturday.
“Initially I was surprised and shocked, now I’m quite excited about it,” De’King said. “You’re usually so involved with running your business you don’t often take the time to appreciate what you’ve achieved.”
De’King moved from Sydney to Medowie in 2017 and in July that year opened the gymnastics club.
The club operates out of the Medowie Sports and Business Centre.
The former massage therapist, who has a background in gymnastics, established the centre to give her then 3 year old daughter, and other young children in the area, a new indoor activity to do.
Since opening, the club has gained 85 young gymnasts and three coaches, two of which De’King introduced to the sport. Chloe Riley, 16, has been coaching with De’King for a year.
Alexander White, 19, was brought in last year to coach the boys classes.
De’King believed the club’s nomination was also based on introducing children and coaches to gymnastics.
Avanti Rhymics, St John Bosco and Dubbo RSL are nominated alongside Medowie.
