The students were each presented at a ceremony last week with a $2000 cheque through the popular Port Stephens Mayoral Academic Scholarship program.
The scholarships are supported by the council and funded by 13 Port Stephens businesses, who generously donated $32,000 collectively to help the students realise their potential.
Ampcontrol, Destination Port Stephens, Hunter Land, Hunter Readymixed Concrete, McDonald Jones Homes, Newcastle Airport, Raymond Terrace Bowling Club, Salamander Bay Recycling, Soldiers Point Bowling Club, SUEZ Resource Recovery Centre, The Wests Groups, Tomago Aluminium and Weathertex all contributed to the 2019 program.
Mayor Ryan Palmer says the program highlights the capability and dedication of Port students.
“Whether it’s a year’s worth of textbooks, a laptop, or help with accommodation, this contribution goes a long way to support local students and encourage life-long learning,” Mayor Palmer said.
“This year, our scholarships will help students studying everything from mechatronics and engineering to Pacific studies and music.
“The strength of the applications we received absolutely blew me away. Our young people in Port Stephens are committed not just to their own development, but are also interested in giving back to our community through their professional choices.
“It’s wonderful to see so many bright and determined students benefit from the generosity of our local businesses. By investing in these scholarships, our businesses make a big difference in the lives of young people setting out on the next stage of their academic journey.
“I want to thank all of our local businesses who have invested in the Mayoral Academic Scholarship Program — some for many years — for their generosity. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to support the aspirations of our young people in this way.”
