Port Stephens duty MLC Catherine Cusack and Liberal candidate Jaimie Abbott visited the SES unit at its Raymond Terrace base on Thursday and announced it would provide the funds required to buy an emergency generator.
“The current 23 year old generator has reached the end of its serviceable life and is currently out of service due to the non-availability of spare parts," Ms Abbott said.
"Having no generator supply puts people’s lives at risk if communication with other emergency services and Emergency Operations Centre is lost.
“The men and women of the SES do a fantastic job in the most difficult of conditions. This generator will provide critical power to the Incident Control Centre in the event of network outages.
“This funding for emergency infrastructure enables the road rescue and flood rescue crews to maintain communications with other emergency services, and could potentially make all the difference for a rescue."
Port Stephens SES Unit Commander David Douglas welcomed the announcement.
“Thanks to the NSW Government for providing this funding which will enable us to continue to protect and serve our community,” he said.
