It is a day when we celebrate the incalculable social, cultural, economic, technological and political achievements of women - while also campaigning for greater progress towards gender equality and opportunity.
As founder and CEO of Hover UAV, a drone innovation, service and systems management provider, I see that I have a responsibility and an obligation to be a positive role model to younger woman entering into STEM careers particularly in male dominated arenas such as the drone industry.
Numbers of females entering into technology based professions is far lower than those of our male counterparts, which is something that needs to change.
My passion is found working on projects that connect and collaborate with people all over the globe utilising technology to better benefit humanitarian and conservation projects. I pride myself on being a mentor and adviser to woman both in Australia and overseas.
At present I am a mentor to the ladies at the Fiji-based knowledge hub Pacific flying Labs (We Robotics) focused on solving local and regional humanitarian challenges and needs through the use of appropriate robotics and AI technologies in the South Pacific region.
For myself, I see strong female role models as vital to younger woman entering into STEM careers. Technology is all about solving problems and women are natural problem solvers. We are great at not only asking questions, but also listening and achieving tangible outcomes.
Role models matter greatly to young women. It’s about what they see and perceive you do. Being a strong role model for these girls can be a very powerful tool when they start making career choices and during there careers. For other women, IWD may mean something entirely different and that is fantastic. It is a celebration of women, diversity, different perspectives and their contributions no matter how large or small.
It was an amazing honour to be a winner of the inaugural 2018 Port Stephens IWD scholarship along with Allissa Hassett and Skye Swan. I look forward to learning all about the 2019 Port Stephens IWD scholarship recipients and wish them all the best in achieving their goals now and into the future.
