Had it not been for the skill and expertise of the 80-odd woodworkers who call the centre home, the extension of the room would probably be still another two-and-a-half years away. The workmanship of the volunteers saved the centre thousands of dollars.

The remainder of the cost was borne by state and federal governments.

MPs Kate Washington and Meryl Swanson were on hand to witness the official opening of the workshop performed by arts centre president Carolyn Virgona and woodworkers club president John Jeffries.

Also in attendance representing Port Stephens councillor and long time supporter John Nell.

Ms Virgona said that the 60 square metres of extra space was much needed and would allow the woodworkers to expedite production and provide more space to display their wares.

"We are thankful for the financial support from both state and federal members and we are hoping a crown land grant application will fund the shortfall," she said.

Mr Jeffries said that the members were a tight knit group of workers who enjoyed the craft of woodworking.

"Whether they are building a furniture item for the home or a charity, there is always good camaraderie and teamwork among the woodturners and builders. We can make whatever you want, there are no restrictions."

Ms Swanson said that the shed extension was the perfect example of council, state and federal governments working together with the community.

"In 2017, the woodworkers were awarded a federal grant through the Stronger Communities Grants program which provides funding for projects that help enhance the community. This funding went towards the fit out of a renovated shed and a new dust extractor," she said.

Ms Washington paid tribute tot he workmanship of the volunteers and Cr Nell said the arts centre including the woodworkers continued to be a viable and valuable asset for the Port Stephens community.
