Five athletes competed at the NSW Youth Championships in Sydney, with three competing in a higher age group and two coming away with medals.
Under-12 Sienna Newton competed as an under-14 and finished 10th in the 80m hurdles and the 400m heat, under-13 Keira McGregor participated as an under-14, winning silver in the 100m, bronze in long jump and placing sixth in the 200m while under-14 Ebony Newton won silver in the under-15 200m hurdles, bronze in the 100m and sixth in the 200m.
Under-20 Terrace athletes Belle Leonard was sixth in the 100m hurdles and Gemma Hancock finished ninth in the 400m hurdles.
On March 3, under-7 to under-17 athletes from across NSW converged in Dubbo for the two-day Little Athletics State Combined Event Championships, which were held in searing heat.
At this championship, each athlete participates in six events. Performances for all events are allocated points, based on the Little Athletics NSW Multi-Event point score system.
The points are then added together to determine final results.
With as many as 41 athletes in some of the age groups, athletes were pushed to their limits to achieve personal bests and points.
Raymond Terrace was represented by Newton and under-14 Cody Hancock. It was Hancock's first time contenting the event and Newton's second.
By the end of competition on Sunday, Hancock had won gold with personal best performances in the 200m, shot put, 800m, and 90m hurdles.
Until his final event, Hancock was in second place, but his personal best in the 800m secured first place.
Hancock's mother, Sandra, who had volunteered to marshal for the under-14 boys for the weekend said she found the experience "incredibly enjoyable".
Newton finished a commendable 10th place and had achieved PBs in the 60m hurdles, shot put, 800m; and sliced almost 1 second off her 200m.
Raymond Terrace has now finished competition at their centre for the season.
Next weekend is the Little Athletics State Championships at Homebush and nationals in April. The centre’s AGM is March 30. Presentation day is April 5.
