The aim of Junction Inn Fishing Club's annual competition, now in its 14^th year, is to promote the area's rivers and businesses and to encourage families to experience the fun in fishing.

"It's about getting the family out to enjoy the weekend fishing and to promote the area," Junction Inn Fishing Club member Luke Webster said. "It's a social competition, which I think is why its run for so many years."

The prize pool on offer also helps. All entrants, which is typically around the 160 mark, go into the draw to win $2000. That prize pool goes off even if the entrant doesn't drop a line in.

There is also $4000 worth of prizes up for grabs, half of which is allotted to winners of heaviest bag, Holloway, bream and flathead. There are 12 fishing categories that boast a prize pool of $2000.

There are three categories to enter: Nippers (0-11 years) at $10 per entry, Juniors (12-16 years) for $10 per entry, and adults (men and women, 17 years plus) for $25 per entry.

Proceeds raised from the classic is donated to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, Marine Rescue and toward fish restocking.

The classic begins 5pm on Friday, March 22 and ends with a final weigh in and sausage sizzle at the Junction Inn Hotel, Raymond Terrace at 2pm on Sunday, March 24. 

Registrations close 7pm on March 22.

Competitors are allowed to fish on the Williams and Hunter rivers only, but it includes the Newcastle Harbour. The upper boundaries are the junction of the Hunter and Paterson rivers on the Hunter River and the Seaham Bridge on the Williams River. The lower boundary is the end of Stockton and Nobby's break walls in the Newcastle Harbour.
