With six players from last season moving on to play in the Newcastle competition with district clubs, the Magpies could be looking at a regrade for season 2019. However, they are confident of fielding a competitive side.
Several young guns were impressive with hooker Tyler Edmonds and winger Tarryn Roach having strong games while the experience of half back Jack Beverly and full back Steve Soper will be vital for the Terrace when the competition starts.
Mallabula Rugby League Club played their annual clash against West Wallsend for the Changa Cup on Saturday but were outgunned 38-10 by Westy.
The Cup is named after Paul "Changa" Mason, a sergeant in the RAAF, who died from coronary failure while playing for the Mallabula Panthers in April 2006. He was 41.
The Bulla boys were down on players and fronted Wakeman Oval with just the bare bench of four. The team struggled in the humid conditions as fatigue set in.
Compounding the Panthers' problems, they were without captain/coach Conner O'Neill who could miss several opening rounds of the 2019 NHRL competition after he was injured in a Defence force representative fixture a week ago.
On Saturday, tough front rower Leigh Kelly led from the front as usual while fullback Mitch Simmington and Josh Wilson were strong in a beaten team.
