Nelson Bay Football Club is enjoying one of its best starts to a season with the FFA Cup team progressing to the fourth round for the first time in the club's history.

Coach Peter Hamshaw said that the players had worked hard in the off-season to prepare for both the 2019 premiership and knockout series.

"The FFA Cup is a nationwide knockout competition open to community clubs like Nelson Bay all the way up to professional A League clubs," Hamshaw said.

"This is the first time that Nelson Bay has progressed to the fourth round which is a tremendous effort.

"To get into round four the team had to defeat Singleton Strikers, a club side that is three division above us. The score finished level at 2-2, taking the match into a penalty shoot-out."

Keeper Simon Frary emerged as the hero for the Bay when he saved three shots from the penalty spot. Earlier young striker Kean Thomas had scored a brace the locals.

Hamshaw said that the fourth round fixture would not be released by the FFA until all round three matches had been finalised. He expected Nelson Bay would be playing Warners Bay - a club in a league two grades higher than the Bay - before May 12.

Meanwhile, Nelson Bay played its first Zone League 2 competition game last weekend, scoring a tough 2-1 victory over Kahibah.

The Bay's next home game will be played at Tomaree sporting fields on Sunday, April 21.
