The 'Growing Through Grief' gathering was the brainchild of the church pastor Rev Andrew East and parishioners Greg Smith and Peter Butler.

"The idea is to provide hope to all those in the community who suffer in silence with grief and loss ... to let them know they are not alone," Mr Smith said.

"We want to make it a coming together of people of all walks of life. This is not a religious ceremony or service and everyone is welcome."

Mr West said he felt it was important that the church provided leadership in the community in helping others acknowledge and work through their pain.

"We want it to be a special time to acknowledge the burdens that weigh us down and make it hard to live each day. Our aim is to provide a space where people's pain can be acknowledged and to help them find strength for the future.

"There are times when we all have felt overwhelmed by grief or loss ... it is okay to be silent, to be sad, to cry, to be real about what you are feeling. In fact, this can be one of the first steps in growing through grief."

Mr West said that grief was not limited to loved ones, but could include the loss of a pet, a broken relationship, a job, relocation or broken dreams. "The gathering will include music, reflection and silence while inviting a sense of beauty out of the brokenness," he said.

"We liken it to the story of the Kintsugi bowl of hope - an ancient Japanese story about an emperor who repairs a badly broken bowl by placing gold glaze on the broken pieces to make the bowl became more beautiful and valuable than it previously was."

Mr Butler said that people needed to be given a mechanism for release, a symbol to let go. "Loved ones will offer support but sometimes the greatest therapy comes from the inside. 'Growing through Grief' hopes to provide that mechanism."

Following the session which starts at 2pm, there will be afternoon tea.
