Playing in the Moree Vets Week golf tournament, the Anna Bay resident who was diagnosed with Parkinson's three years ago won the shield on April 11 - World Parkinson's Day.
"It was great to win for a change," Smith joked. "I didn't have any idea. It was a complete surprise. You can get quite stiff with Parkinson's and at times it's difficult to coordinate and swing the club but with the right medication and staying healthy and active you can do it. It's very important with Parkinson's to exercise."
Smith, a member of the Tomaree Parkinson's Support Group and Nelson Bay Golf Club, said he has been playing in NSW Veterans Golf Association tournaments for 15 years.
While he does not play in as many tournaments as he once did, he said he enjoyed playing in Moree.
The NSWVGA Week of Golf shield is presented to the tournament's overall winner.
