A yellow Honda Jazz with a 72 year old Metford woman behind the wheel careened off the road, mounted the kerb and went through the wall of the McDonald's drive-through about 6.30pm.
Police said the car narrowly missed two employees working inside the restaurant at the time.
No one was injured.
Police said the Jazz had been involved in a collision with a silver Hyundai i30, driven by a 21 year old Medowie man, at the traffic lights adjacent to the restaurant, which intersect Adelaide and William Bailey streets.
It is understood that the Metford woman had been travelling north on Adelaide Street and entered the left-hand turning lane at the traffic lights out the front of the McDonald's to turn on to William Bailey Street.
At the same time, the Medowie man had been travelling south on Adelaide Street and was making a right-hand turn onto William Bailey Street at the traffic lights.
Police said the front of the Jazz collided with the rear of the Hyundai.
The Hyundai spun onto William Bailey Street and into a light pole. The driver was not injured.
The Jazz mounted the kerb on to the grass outside of the McDonald's drive-though.
Police said the Metford woman attempted to brake but instead put her foot on the accelerator, sending the car through the wall of the drive-through.
The drive-through was closed immediately. The McDonald's restaurant was closed for the remainder of the night. It has since been re-opened.
Both drivers were breath tested after the collision. Both returned negative results.
NSW Fire and Rescue crews from Raymond Terrace and Lambton attended the scene to assess the structural damage to the restaurant.
The matter is now under investigation.
Police said CCTV footage would be looked at.
A Port Stephens-Hunter police spokeswoman said that at the end of the investigation the driver found to be at fault of the collision could be issued an infringement notice.
