And quite often the transition process is equally as confronting for the parents as it is for the child, involving a range of emotions - from anxiety and apprehension to excitement and immense pride.
Each year around 800-900 children start school in the Port Stephens area and building connections between the important stakeholders is a vital component of an effective transition to school process.
The Gan Gan Family Centre located in Anna Bay Public School is organising a transition to school expo where parents can listen to experts such as speech therapists, occupational therapists, out of school care and dieticians.
"On the Tomaree Peninsula this web of connections exists in the early childhood network which consists of educators from child care centres, public schools, independent and Catholic schools, family centres and other support agencies who meet to discuss issues around starting school," said facilitator Jacqui Orwell.
All are welcome to the expo which will be held at Soldiers Point Bowling Club on Thursday, May 23, from 6.30 pm.
The event will be opened by Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer and there will be a number of speakers. Representatives from all local schools will be present, as well as early childhood education and care services staff, Gan Gan Family Centre and other support services from the area.
