The accident occurred after 1pm on Tuesday, just north of East Seaham Road.
When police and paramedics arrived at the scene they found a black Toyota had lost control and hit a large ironbark tree.
The driver, a man in his mid 20s, was trapped inside.
The speciality rescue crew from Port Stephens SES, with the help of Dungog Fire and Rescue, were able to cut the man free.
According to a spokesman for the SES, a ramming technique was used to move the steering column and lift the dash off the man's legs.
He was in a serious condition with injuries to both legs, a suspected broken arm and cuts and abrasions.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called to the scene, but the man was eventually transported by ambulance to John Hunter Hospital.
