Attendees to the May 22 information session will hear talks by Dr Alan Stuart from the Hunter Bird Observers Club and Dr Andrea Griffin from the University of Newcastle.
Dr Stuart is well known for his studies on birds associated with estuaries, beaches and wetlands.
Dr Griffin is a leading researcher in zoology, introducing cutting edge radio tracking equipment into the Hunter to better understand bird movements and introduced bird species.
The information session will teach attendees how to identify different bird species that use the Karuah estuary and the migration journeys shorebirds undertake each year.
Some species fly as far as northern Russia then back to the Port Stephens and Mid Coast areas.
Port Stephens is the second most important site in NSW for migratory shorebirds.
The session will also include information on research currently being done to study the relationships between native and introduced birds and how residents can join efforts to help save endangered species.
The information session will be held at Karuah RSL Club on Wednesday, May 22 from 6pm to 8pm.
A light supper will be included. For more information or to RSVP contact Hunter Local Land Services senior land services officer Reegan Walker on 0429 361 781 or via email on reegan.walker@lls.nsw.gov.au.
