The council is constructing the sanctuary that will care for sick, injured and orphaned koalas in a natural setting and is calling for Expressions of Interest to create the artwork.
The proposed installation will form part of the creative aspect of the sanctuary and is part funded through the Stronger Communities Programme.
According to the council brief, the project aims to select an innovative and unique statement sculpture to tell the story of, and celebrate the Koala in Port Stephens, the role of the facility and the natural environment.
"It will present the story in an innovative and interactive way, encouraging visitors to further explore the Koala story in Port Stephens. The project provides an opportunity for artists to explore the intersections of nature, art and storytelling," the brief states.
