Long Toms are a strange fish, related to the garfish there are 35 species and they can be found all over the world. There is one less since seven-year-old champion Tahi Puru, on his very first fishing trip, headed for Fingal Beach with a pipi for bait.

Whale watch
The whales are on the move. Expect to meet one or more every time you motor out to sea. I had the most exciting experience when I motored within a couple of metres of a monster. A timely reminder to make sure you wear a life jacket.
Busy fish
Reported this week bumper bream off Stockton Beach and Fingal. Dusky flathead busy inside the port and monster mulloway cruising the deep water.
Home paradise
I have just returned from an excursion which took me from Eden in the south to Tweed Heads on the Queensland border. I returned home to Port Stephens convinced we live in the greatest place. The fishing, habitat, scenery and boating options cannot be matched.
