On Sunday, August 11, Anna Bay's Amanda Sutherland will tackle the gruelling 14 kilometre journey from Sydney's CBD to the iconic Bondi Beach which each year attracts tens of thousands of runners.
Sutherland, who has eight children and three grandchildren, said she decided to contest the City2Surf to help raise much-needed funds for Autism Australia.
"I have chosen Autism Australia as one of my sons has Asperger's syndrome, a high functioning form of autism which was only discovered in the 1950s," Sutherland said.
"Little is still known about the condition, which often goes hand in hand with schizophrenia.
"Unfortunately, Autism Australia does not receive as much funding as other charities yet more and more young children are being diagnosed with Asperger's so research and support is very important for those with a disability and their families."
Since arriving in Port Stephens more than 30 years ago, Sutherland has been a valuable contributor to her community, volunteering her time to groups such as Meals on Wheels, Tomaree Musical Theatre, Birubi Tennis, Anna Bay Precinct Committee, Nelson Bay AFL and the disability sector. She has also worked with Marine Rescue, Legacy Widows and with the Rotary reading program at Anna Bay school.
Five years ago Sutherland was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, but fortunately for her it was found early and she was successfully treated with chemotherapy and radiation.
"I also participated in some research with the HMRI," she said.
Sutherland said she has had to overcome a number of minor setbacks since she began training for the City2Surf. "A little over a month ago I dropped a frozen container on my foot, breaking my toe in two places. However, it has healed sufficiently and I am back doing my daily runs along Birubi Beach."
This is the 49th running of the Sun-Herald City2Surf, with the 14km course of today becoming one of the most loved and largest community events in the world.
In 2018 there were 28 runners who participated in the event for the 48th consecutive year. The race attracts entrants from all walks of life, epitomising what the City2Surf is about; fun, fitness, fundraising, and being a part of the community.
Sutherland's goal is to raise $1000 for Autism Australia and appreciates any donations from the public. To donate, find Amanda Sutherland on everydayhero.com.au.
