The Bay was under siege in the first half with the students having 70 per cent of the ball. However, the Gropers produced a fine defensive performance to shut down their attacking raids.
The Bay produced three first half tries despite limited possession and went into the break leading 19-0. Sam Ingham, Emerson Burgess and Cameron Rouse all scored tries.
The conditions restricted open rugby in the second half with the hard working flankers Sam Rocher and Nathan Oliver both sharing the players' player award. Junior Polei had a strong game in the backs.

Fingal Bay Rugby League slipped down the competition ladder after losing to Belmont South 30-4 last Saturday.
The Bomboras had the job in front of them after trailing 18-4 at half time. Injuries compounded their problems, losing three players in the first half. On field leader Bo Earl and Adam Hodson are out with concussion for Saturday's clash against Woodbury.
Fingal can still make a charge for a top four finish with four of their last six games at home. In a beaten team tough front rower Lee Preston led from the front. Young gun Jayden Barnes never took a backward step while versatile back Rob Bryant had a fine game.
The Fingal ladies continued their stellar form and currently are in second place after a 12-6 win over Raymond Terrace Ravens on the weekend.
A late intercept try by Victoria Hawthorn sealed the victory with sister Bec also scoring a four pointer. For the Ravens, Jasmine Fellows and players' player Cynthia Woodhouse had strong games. Fingal are home this Saturday. Kick off is 2pm.
Raymond Terrace Rugby League Club showed plenty of character by forcing a draw 24-24 in their clash with the Abermain Hawks.
The Magpies trailed 12-6 at half time and 24-12 with 10 minutes left on the clock. Late tries to five eight Billy Greentree and hooker Tyler Edmonds plus a sideline conversion by sharp shooter Jack Beverly, who also was the players' player, levelled the scores.
Centre Jade Williamson and Rob Fletcher had strong games while captain-coach Brooke Roach moved the goal posts when he crashed over for the opening try.
The Terrace host Gloucester this Saturday. Kick off is 3pm.
Nelson Bay Junior Rugby League Club continues to develop promising junior talent with seven under-13s making the Newcastle development squad.
Selected was: Jeddlin Beninca, Max Fines, Zac Harrison, Rylee Moses-Kinkaid, Talon O'Neill, Jarrod Walls and Jett Woodward.
Under-14 players also in the development squad are Cooper Read and Jarrad Williams. Jarrad also made the Knights elite development team.
Anders Glew has been selected in the NSW CIS team.
Mallabula Rugby League Club struggled in the slippery conditions at the weekend with University adapting at their home ground better than the Panthers to run out 18-10 victors.
The Panthers remain in third spot and line up against shorthand this Saturday at home.
The Bulla boys' players' player went to Nic Hall with hard working prop Owen Daniels doing his best up front.
