The Hornets, taking off from the RAAF base about 11am, flew in a "double seven" formation over Nelson Bay, Medowie, Raymond Terrace and Newcastle before landing in Williamtown shortly before noon.
The flypast and formation was to commemorate the Squadron's years of operation and history.
The double seven formation was also flown in 1955 using the Gloster Meteor aircraft when the Squadron conducted a return to Australia at the end of the Korean War.
