A fire that burned through about 300 square metres of grassy swamp land and threw up a thick plume of black smoke in Raymond Terrace on Friday has been extinguished.
Raymond Terrace Fire and Rescue were called to the scene of the fire in Talavera Close, near Dalyell Way, about 11.30am. They arrived about 10 minutes later.
Three Raymond Terrace Fire Brigade crews assisted the NSW Fire and Rescue unit in establishing containment lines and extinguishing the blaze.
Raymond Terrace Fire and Rescue deputy captain, Giacomo Arnott, said the fire was extinguished within two hours.
He added that no houses had been under threat.
Police were also called to the scene of the fire. Officers spoke with residents of neighbouring properties to where the grass fire broke out, seeking information about suspicious people or activity in the area.
Raymond Terrace Fire and Rescue called on members of the public who witnessed any suspicious behaviour in the area prior to the fire starting to contact police.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or through nsw.crimestoppers.com.au.
The Raymond Terrace fire also coincided with Fire and Rescue NSW beginning a recruitment campaign, urging men and women with diverse skills to consider taking on the job, on Friday.
Fire and Rescue NSW Commissioner Paul Baxter said the campaign usually attracts more than 6000 applications from diverse backgrounds.
"We are looking for people who reflect the professionalism, dedication and values of Fire and Rescue NSW, including people who may have never considered becoming a firefighter," he said.
"Our newest class of graduates - which includes a former interior designer, a professional lifeguard, a physiotherapist, a commercial diver, a youth worker and a builder - demonstrates that great firefighters come from all types of backgrounds."
"We are looking for fit, passionate and resilient individuals with well-developed interpersonal skills and the capacity to undertake the many different roles of a modern firefighter, including fire response and investigation, community engagement, rescue and hazardous materials response."
