The money was handed to guest speaker Mike Greenslade, for ShelterBox, an initiative of Rotary International, at the Nelson Bay club's most recent meeting.
Club president Arja Levonpera said that ShelterBox, an international disaster relief charity established in 2000, provides emergency shelter and other aid items to families around the world who have lost their homes to disaster or conflict.
"While the Rotary Club of Nelson Bay provides support to many local and community charities, we were very happy to present a cheque for $1000 to this most worthy cause," she said.
Nelson Bay Rotary meets every Thursday night at Nelson Bay Bowling Club, at 6pm.
These meetings are an opportunity for fellowship and fun, but are used to discuss on going projects and fundraising, and often have guest speakers.
