The new complex is an extension of the business that began life at 20-22 Shearwater Drive in Taylors Beach in 2012.
"Following research it became apparent there was a need for undercover boat, van, and car storage, as well as household and business storage in Port Stephens," said Hugh Bateman, who co-owns the business with his wife Catherine.
"In modern day storage complexes we noted the need for space between units for turning circles, security, and general ease of access for our clients. This was incorporated in our design at Shearwater Drive.
"Last year further research revealed a need for further units, and having fully utilised our existing site, we recognised the need to acquire more land close to the existing facility and thus acquired land in Commerce Close, Taylors Beach just behind Bunnings."
Construction of the building commenced prior to Christmas, using local steel fabricators, cladding specialists, plumbing, security technicians and others, with emphasis of always putting back into the community.
"That has been our philosophy, and indeed at the opening of our new complex this Friday at 4pm by the Port Stephens Council lord mayor, we will celebrate that community support by conducting auctions of items for the Salamander Bay Men's Shed," Mr Bateman said.
Local tradesmen have been pivotal in realising the project and paid tribute to the Bateman's support for the local area.
"They have a number of projects going in the local area and are tremendous people to deal with," David Connor from Nelson Bay Roofing said.
Mr and Mrs Bateman are also heavily involved in the McGrath Foundation and started the Pink Up Your Town initiative in 2016 to raise money for breast cancer research.
Indeed, in 2015 Mr Bateman drove a pink tractor 2900km around NSW and raised $380,000 dollars
'We were tremendously supported in Port Stephens and I'm proud to say Pink Up Your Town is now a national event with 30 towns, cities and suburbs pinking up in October," Mr Bateman said.
"We believe in giving back to the community and the local tradesmen who support what we do.
"The Port Stephens Council were excellent. Their Planning and Engineering team were extremely helpful and prompt.
"Our opening this Friday afternoon will mark the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Port Stephens Self Storage and a tribute to all those who helped make it possible."
