With work expected to commence later this month on the $3 million koala hospital at Anna Bay, Port Stephens Koalas (PSK) has taken delivery of three rescue/triage cages designed to carry and transport sick and injured koalas.
Ron Land, PSK secretary, said that the aluminium structures were lightweight and adjustable, ensuring ease of access and transportation for carers and hospital staff.
He said that the cost of the cages - at $2000 each - had been funded through a government Stronger Communities grant, matched dollar for dollar by PSK, plus a $5000 donation from the Australian Wildlife Society.
"The total funding enabled us to purchase a second hand, off-road vehicle in addition to the three cages, which can be easily fitted into the back of the vehicle for transporting injured and ill koalas," Mr Land said.
"The multi-use cages, designed by our carer Simone Aurino, have adjustable legs for safe lifting purposes and are strong enough to carry animals weighing up to 10kg.
"Due to their flexibility they can also be adjusted for convenient use by the hospital staff when treating koalas."
Mr Land said the cages were manufactured by Nelson Bay Steel Fabrication, located in George Road at Salamander Bay, because the organisation had a policy to use Port Stephens businesses wherever possible.
"We are very pleased with the work and again we say thank-you for the ongoing community support including grants and donations."
