The Gropers remained unbeaten all season to lift the Hunter Junior Rugby trophy for the fourth consecutive season by downing the strong Wanderers team in an epic decider.
The boys, in fact, have only lost three games in four years of rugby under coach Clint Brown, who was this year assisted by Grant Stewart.
Despite some heavy rain on the eve of grand final day, the Tomaree Oval surface held firm for a full day of matches starting with the under 10s at 9am and finishing with the under 16s late in the afternoon.
While the Bay's under 12 side ended a very competitive 2019 season with the runners-up flag, going down to Maitland 31-12 in the decider, there was no denying the gritty and courageous under 13 year boys.
The home side started strongly, scoring four first half tries through centre Oscar Affleck (2), halfback Darcy Brown and winger Noah Hill, with Affleck adding three conversions.
Wanderers, eager to avenge their semi-final loss despite the result ending in a 24-24 draw, would not be intimidated and almost matched the Bay with three of their own tries in the opening stanza.
The halftime score of 26-21 would remain unchanged in a fiercely contested second half period, with coach Brown paying tribute to his players' never-say-die attitude in defence.
"We defended magnificently in that second half. Having said that, the boys did not shut up shop in attack and in fact hammered the Wanderers lines for the final 10 minutes," Brown said.
"It was truly a great team effort and a classic grand final finish. Every player contributed and I want to give special praise to our new tight head prop forward Hunter Westwood who shared the best on ground honours with Oscar Affleck and Darcy Brown.
"In fact the entire squad of 24 players are all worthy of mention for the way they have approached both training and game days in 2019."
Brown was also complimentary of the Gropers junior committee and the ground staff who ensured the Tomaree surface would remain intact over three weeks of rugby finals.
