In response the Examiner's article last week headed 'Petition for Dialysis Unit at Tomaree', a HNEH spokesperson said that due to the geographical spread of the population, and number of patients requiring treatment, the decision was made to locate the service in Raymond Terrace, a 40-minute drive from Tomaree Hospital.
"We will, however, ensure that dialysis services in Tomaree are considered in future service planning for the Port Stephens area.
"There are two patients from Tomaree peninsula who travel to John Hunter Hospital for dialysis treatment, due to the complexity of their treatment they are unable to be treated at a satellite service.
"The Port Stephens Community Transport Service provides travel assistance to patients who require dialysis at Raymond Terrace, operating on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, transporting patients to and from their appointment for a gold coin donation."
