Having lived in Blanch Street, Boat Harbour, for 40 years, the couple sold up two years ago and moved to Harbourside Haven in Shoal Bay.
Joan, aged 82, and Ernie, 85, celebrated the milestone with a family gathering at Wests Diggers, described by family and friends as a "momentous occasion".
Prior to retirement, Ernie was an underground miner and Joan had several jobs as a seamstress and made clothing and repairs for family and friends.
"She was very involved in the tennis club at Boat Harbour," said daughter Julie McMahon. "I don't know what is their secret to 65 years of marriage, but they still talk to each other."
The couple raised two daughters, Linda and Julie, and have four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. In a term of endearment, the great grandchildren would call the couple 'old nanny and poppy'.
