The club's strong bounce back from the 2015 fire which destroyed its clubhouse, climbing membership numbers, junior involvement and impressive clubhouse operations in the past 12 months were cited as reasons that the Bay club beat out fellow category finalists Charlestown, Dubbo, Newcastle, Queanbeyan, and Rich River in the NSW Golf Industry Awards presented in Sydney on October 21.
"The Club of the Year - Country Award is great recognition for the team at Nelson Bay Golf Club including directors, volunteers, staff, contractors and members who have been through a lot together since the devastating clubhouse fire in September 2015," Nelson Bay Golf Club's general manager, Trevor Harrison, said.
Harrison, who attended the presentation, was also personally recognised with the Golf Management Australia NSW Fellow Award.
The industry award comes after Nelson Bay Golf Club won the Examiner's 2019 Annual Business Award for best club in Port Stephens.
Nelson Bay was named a finalist in the annual NSW Golf awards in September.
In its finalist bio, it was stated the club is "a popular venue for many visitors and members".
"The club has bounced back after a severe fire destroyed the clubhouse in 2015.
"Nelson Bay has seen its membership grow by an impressive 600 members in the last financial year, targeting juniors and members under the age of 35.
"Clubhouse operations are strong, with over 300 functions held in the last 12 months. Course use is up, with a 3 per cent growth in rounds played over the previous year.
"The club continues to support local charities in the district, including a new Parkinson's charity known as the Movers & Shakers, and has been recognised in the NSW Parliament for its service to the community."
