Fresh sea worms for bait tossed out just behind the first set of breaking waves.
The girls eagerly awaited the first whiting to take an interest.
Whammo! This was no whiting.
The reel screamed and what ever was on the other end was not happy.
Finally, flapping in the shallows was a thumping great Aussie salmon.
A few more were soon bounced up the beach.
Fascinating fish the Eastern Australian Salmon - looks a bit like a tailor on steroids.
Broad shoulders and a torpedo body, the fish is built for speed.
Together with a tenacious fighting spirit, landing a salmon is not an easy task.
Oddly the salmon is not a salmon at all, in fact there are no native true salmon in this country.
True, there are Atlantic salmon in Tasmania but they are farmed and not indigenous to that state.
So, after a short meeting it was agreed that salmon are a poor quality table fish so it was decided that the fish would make excellent crab bait.
Next time try turning them into fish cakes. Awesome! You will be back for more.
