Mr Molan was preselected by the Liberal Party at the weekend to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Arthur Sinodinos, who has been appointed Australia's next ambassador of the United States.
The former senator, who lost his seat at the May election, has committed to staying on only until the next Senate election.
