A novel idea to engage the youth of Tanilba Bay is expected to provide young people with new business opportunities, which in turn aims to contribute to a sense of achievement and acceptance.

The program, an initiative of the Tilligerry-based Centre for Hope, involves a bike hire and repairs business. It is still awaiting council approval.
The centre's youth worker, who goes by the name of Doel, explains: "Newcastle Permanent Foundation has funded a program that Centre For Hope will facilitate and operate. The young people in the program have called it Riverside Rides. An application is currently in with Port Stephens Council."
The Tanilba Bay centre, which runs similar to a youth drop-in centre, has been operating out of the former Girl Guides hall for a little over two years, offering a host of fun games and programs every Tuesday from 3pm-5pm and Fridays between 4pm-8.30pm.
Ages from 6 to 16 are catered for.
"We have computer games, pool table, ping pong, boards games, ball games, art and craft activities and we are always seeking more and newer items through donations," Doel said. "The volunteers help cook food and look after the welfare of the young people who turn up, which on average sits around 20."
The centre staff work closely and collaboratively with Port Stephens schools. One of those programs is Steps for Success currently run at Hunter River High.
"It is run weekly and our students work in groups with coaches and mentors. It aims to create resilience and respect among the students," Doel said.
Centre for Hope began operations five years ago in Newcastle and has since expanded its service in Port Stephens.
It aims to provide an opportunity for young disadvantaged people to be heard, respected and acknowledged.
"We foster hope by curating programs and workshops that focus on developing self-esteem, emotional Intelligence and setting goals," Doel said.
The centre provides coaches and mentors who are strong role models for young disadvantaged youth, supporting families and carers.
