Kerrie Cottrill has organised a working bee to make pouches and sacks for the hundreds of thousands of wildlife, predominantly possums, koalas and kangaroos, injured in the devastating bushfires.
"My aim is to make up to 1,000 possum pouches and koala and kangaroo sacks to help in the bushfire relief effort," Ms Cottrill said.
"I have already had some fantastic support from people wanting to assist in Port Stephens and beyond, including a friend from France who wants to help out."
Ms Cottrill has put out a call to the Port community for blankets which need to be 100 per cent wool, not polyester or fleece, and flannelette sheets.
"Then over three days from Wednesday to Friday, January 22-24, we are inviting as many people as possible to attend a sewing bee to take place at the Tomaree library [donated by Port Stephens Council], where the material will be sewed into pouches and sacks.
"We are also asking volunteers to bring along sewing machines, scissors and whatever else they can spare over the three days. And you don't have to know how to sew."
Ms Cottrill said that once completed, the pouches and sacks will be transported to the WIRES head office in Sydney's Brookevale for distribution. For details contact Kerrie on 0413 878 020.
