Now that school has started and most of our holiday visitors have returned home, I sometimes wonder if we locals realise just how fortunate we are to live in a place where others choose to visit and spend their hard-earned dollar.

I received a short letter through the week telling me of the great enjoyment a family experienced on their recent holidays here in Port Stephens.
The family are from the small town of Wombat which, like most country towns, has experienced severe drought and the ongoing threat of bushfire.
"Huge excitement for Fergus Houston, 8 years, on holidays from Wombat, NSW visiting his grandparents Peter and Jane Foster of Fingal.
On a late afternoon trip to Little Beach, he first fished off the beach, then moved to the wharf.
On his second cast using a prawn, a fabulous 48 cm flathead jumped on his line and with the help of a kind fisherman, the fish was safely landed.
Wow, the joy of cooking and later eating your first fish at a picnic on the beautiful Fingal foreshore.
What an amazing day, surfing the waves at One Mile Beach all day and then catch your first BIG fish."
