Meanwhile, the club's women's sevens team is a forced to be reckoned with in the Newcastle and Hunter Rugby Union competition. Since the start of the series at Tomaree Sports Complex on February 14, the Gropers women have won three from four games. On Friday, February 28, the Gropers women face Maitland and the Waratahs at Waratah Park.
Gropers Coach Darren Zorbas will step up training to Monday and Thursday nights at 6.30pm. He announced that recruitment is on track with two quality Kiwi players keen to play rugby with the club: Issac Griffin, a representative lock from the Taranaki, and tight head prop Daniel Davis from the west coast who will provide some grunt up front.
The Gropers have as trial game on March 7 against Hawkesbury Valley Rugby Club. The NHRU season starts on March 28 with a trip to Singleton followed by a home game against Merewether.
MALLABULA rugby league players are working hard on their fitness as the season kick off draws closer. Coach Cameron Scully has several new players set to join the Panthers including two from Newcastle. Fingal Bay recruits Bo Earl and Adam Hodson will be training with the Panthers on Tuesday and Thursday at 6pm. The ladies league tag are still chasing players but have the experienced trio of Beth Daniels, Caitlin de Pater and Maddy Malcolm to form a competitive side.
