There has been a changing of the guard at Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group with long-time president Taurie Lalor handing the reins over to Judy Watton.

Mrs Watton, a veteran member of the support group having joined as a volunteer in 2002, took over the presidency from Ms Lalor at the start of March.
"Taurie needed someone to take over and I put my hand up. I've hit the ground running," Mrs Watton said. "I think the group is such a good cause. I've had breast cancer in my family, I have had friends affected by it - I know how debilitating it can be. The work we do is important and we'll keep providing that support."
Ms Lalor, who was named 2020 Port Stephens Local Woman of the Year during International Women's Day celebrations in March, said she was stepping down as president but not leaving the group.
"I'll never leave the group. It's part of my DNA," she said. "I've been part of the group since 2003 and president since 2012. I did it for a very long time and felt that it was the right time to step down."
Ms Lalor had just retired to Nelson Bay when she heard about the group, founded by Nola Lawler in 2001.
The group's hands-on and practical volunteer work, such as driving patients to their appointments in Newcastle and Maitland, appealed to Ms Lalor.
"You're sharing something special with these people who are facing the worst time of their lives but are so brave and resilient," she said. "They're shining examples to all women."
In 2019 the group assisted 35 Tomaree residents. In addition to driving patients to appointments free of charge, the group also provides house cleaning, lawn mowing, child minding services (at the discretion of the committee), wigs, scarves and underarm cushions, telephone and face-to-face support.
The group is able to provide this support with the money it raises through its two annual major fund-raising events, a breakfast and golf day, and donations from individuals, community groups, organisations and businesses.
Ms Lalor said she is "very proud" of the group's achievements, including establishing a monthly get-together for patients past and present. She also paid tribute to the "stamina" of the group's "amazing" volunteers.
