Prior to the pandemic there were over 27,000 jobs in Port Stephens, but this has been, and will continue to be, significantly negatively impacted while the pandemic continues.
So there has never been a more important time for our residents to look at opportunities to 'Shop Port Stephens'. It will keep many businesses alive and keep people employed.
There are of course some government restrictions but there are also many businesses endeavouring to remain open.
For example, there is a Facebook page for food outlets called "Port Stephens EaTS" which provides up to date information from where you can purchase takeaway meals. Also, in some cases they are offering free delivery to your home - this is a really important opportunity to help support small businesses and jobs in Port Stephens in this time of crisis particularly if you are able to afford it.
It is a time for locals to make an effort to continue with their normal local spending habits and also for our businesses to make the effort to source local suppliers.
In fact, our council has provided very strong leadership last week by agreeing to review their procurement policy by providing an additional 10 per cent weighting towards purchasing their products and services from local suppliers.
This will provide an opportunity for local businesses to tender for these products and services and also council has indicated that they will be looking at providing guidance to local businesses to assist them understand how to take advantage of this opportunity - a great initiative. In fact, the council resolution also offered payment terms of seven days which is a great incentive to assist business with their cash flow.
So, I appeal to locals to get out and support local businesses in this time of need at your local shopping centres and using local service providers so keep spending to ensure local jobs and businesses can continue.
