Port Stephens councillors agreed on Tuesday night to name the pathway 'Shirley O'Brien Way' on the suggestion of deputy mayor Chris Doohan in recognition of the contribution made to the Port Stephens community of the former councillor and prolific volunteer worker, who died at 75 in October last year.
Affectionately known as 'Aunt Shirl', the Anna Bay stalwart served one term on Port Stephens Council (2008-2012), was a founding member with her first husband Peter Broadfoot (deceased) of Birubi Surf Lifesaving Club and was an active member of a range of community groups.
Cr Doohan's notice of motion, which won unanimous support from colleagues at the June 9 meeting of council, said the pathway naming in Anna Bay was suitable recognition for Shirley's tireless volunteer work throughout her adult life.
"During Shirley's term of council, she was delegate on a range of committees including Aboriginal Strategic Committee; Anna Bay, Birubi Point, Bobs Farm, Williamtown and Fern Bay Hall and Tidy Towns; Port Stephens Adult Choir; Port Stephens Sister Cities; Strategic Cultural Committee and the Medowie Floodplain Management Committee."
She was also a member of the Maori Culture Club and the Anna Bay Fishing Club up until her death.
Construction of the pathway was completed last month after years of lobbying by Anna Bay residents, pedestrians and cyclists for safety reasons.
