Just ask 10 year old champion Joey Trinkler, who could catch a fish in a pot hole on the Bobs Farm road.
Tossing a lure around the Karuah Bridge, Joey hooked something big which turned out to be a 2.2kg tailor. Tailor that size are rarely reported anywhere from Broughton Island to Birubi let alone Karuah. Go Joey.
With the Port Stephens-Great Lake Marine Park currently under the microscope it is interesting to look at the history of the Port particularly a Royal Commission conducted in the Sea Breeze Hotel, Nelson Bay, in November 1894.
Of particular interest was an interview with Samuel Lilley the spokesman for the 60 commercial fishermen who worked the waters of Port Stephens.
To the question: "Can you tell the Commission the closures in force at present?" Mr Lilley answered: "Telligherry Creek, Swan Bay and the Karuah River - the whole of the Karuah from the punt to Alicetown."
Fishing in closed waters, the question: "Do you believe in the seizure and confiscation of nets for that offence?" The answer: "I would fine or imprison a man but not take his net away."
