John Adelsback has given me the answer with a couple of cracker flathead he landed tossing hard bodied lures into the shallows around Tomago.
Fishing is all about habitat and it stands to reason that where you find healthy mangroves and sea grasses you will find prawns and fingerlings which in turn attracts bream, flathead and even bigger predators including mulloway. Let's not forget mudcrabs and blue swimmers. The same story applies in Tilligerry and the Karuah system.
The mangrove forests in the Karuah and Tilligerry systems and the extensive sea grass meadows throughout the harbour are largely responsible for the fantastic fishing opportunities that are available throughout the entire port and even off-shore.
As the current custodians of Port Stephens it is up to us to protect and monitor our magnificent waterways. With the improvement in sea conditions I have been busy in Stinkpot motoring from Boulder Bay to the shallow reefs off the Outer Light.
Pleasing to report that snapper are in excellent numbers with fish between 40-45 cm keen to smash floating squid and slimy fillets.
