A Regis spokesperson said that the decision reintroduce stringent access controls was made with the residents and families health and safety front of mind.

It follows the decision by Port Stephens Veterans and Citizens Aged Care Ltd, which trades as Harbourside Haven, to lockdown its facilities on Wednesday morning, restricting physical access to visitors for a period of 14 days "when the situation would be revisited".

The Regis decision also affects residents of Regis Elermore Vale in Newcastle.

"We have made this decision because of the heightened risk of COVID-19 in these areas due to confirmed cases at the Salamander Bay Shopping Centre and Windsor Castle Hotel in East Maitland," the spokesperson said.

"We strongly believe this precautionary measure is the best way to keep those in our care safe. We will continue to review advice from the NSW and federal governments and will update the community of any changes."

The reinstated controls means that permit visits at Regis Port Stephens and Elermore Vale would not be permitted unless the visit is for compassionate reasons.

"We are continuing to ensure that families can stay in touch with their loved ones with alternative forms of communication, such as Facetime and audio calls and window visits," the spokesperson said.

"To help protect our residents and staff, Regis is also mandating the use of face masks for all staff and visitors in these Homes. This is an additional infection control precaution beyond our current infection control practices.

"There will be no obligation for our residents to wear a mask but if they do wish to wear one, we will of course provide them. Resident and staff safety and well-being remain our highest priority."
