In February this year Port Stephens councillors agreed to keep the liquor licence in council's hands, while the search for an operator of the facility was launched.

Reports at the time listed four "highly reputable" potential operators.

A council spokesperson this week said that due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, negotiations with potential operators had been impacted.

"We realise this is a very difficult time for business and some of the interested operators have pulled out due to financial reasons, while others have had to focus on their existing operations," the spokesperson said.

"We are focused on working with potential operators through the EOI period and are confident in securing a suitable operator to deliver this exciting facility to the community."

On the question of the fit-out of the premises, the spokesperson said this would be determined by the desire of the business.

"We will work with potential operators to ensure that the fit-out of the facility meets the needs of the community."

The Examiner contacted the club's number one supporter Cr Chris Doohan for comment but had not received a response by deadline on Tuesday.

In seeking EOIs, the council's community and recreation coordinator Brock Lamont said that he was focused on finding the right operator to achieve the best outcome for the community and working closely with interested parties.

The council is also seeking EOIs to operate the farmers market, first flagged in May, with the intention of starting a monthly Sunday morning farmers market to showcase the wares of Medowie and surrounds farmers.
