Tomaree Youth Community Action (TYCA), organisers of the hugely popular skate and scooter comp for the past five years, has announced a virtual event to be stage over the Christmas school holiday period.
TYCA's newly elected president, Nelson Bay mother-of-two Avril Saunders, who is also a counselor with COPSY's Jupiter program, said that the virtual contest was open to all Port Stephens youths.
And, entry is free.
"We have decided to run the 2020 skate and scooter comp online, where competitors can showcase their skills, or a series of tricks, with video evidence and uploading it to the TYCA Facebook page," Ms Saunders said.
"The performance must be filmed between December 12, 2020, and January 20, 2021. Judges will be looking for degree of difficulty, completion and appearance. There will also be points for creativity, including camera angles, lighting and music. Entries must be limited to two minutes."
Ms Saunders said that prizes would be awarded to winners in different age divisions: 7 to 11 years, 12-14 and 15-17 in both skateboarding and scooter categories.
As part of a new leadership team, Ms Saunders said that TYCA - a not-for-profit organisation that aims to empower the youth of Port Stephens to fulfill their potential - was looking forward to reactivating a series of projects following the pandemic shutdown.
"We want to unite our youth during this time and provide them with support and activities in areas such as the creative arts. We are recruiting new, young people who are looking for activities outside of mainstream sport," she said.
