In the second of Newcastle and Hunter Rugby Union's three round nine games played out in Medowie on Saturday, the home side was defeated 44-5 by the visiting Merewether.
"Merewether came out hard and ran in a couple quick tries," Will Klopper, president of Medowie and Districts Rugby Union Club, said. "Medowie didn't back down and fought back hard, keeping the ball close to their forwards with good pick and drive strategies. Merewether's defence, however, held up and Medowie only managed to cross their line once."
Medowie was the place to be on Saturday, September 26 to see the Hunter's top women's ruby union teams go head-to-head. The first game of the day was between Maitland and Wanderers.
In what Klopper said was a "very hard and physical game with a narrow points difference in the first half", Maitland came away with a couple of unanswered tries in the second half to see them walk away with a 34-17 victory. The final game of the day saw the undefeated Waratahs women take on the second team on the ladder, Hamilton.
"It was a very hard game with each team answering straight after the opposition scored. The Waratahs' only opened a gap in the score line in the second half."
The Waratahs won 36-19.
Despite the chilly and windy conditions on Saturday, many supporters turned out to watch the three games hosted in Medowie.
"The supporters that came down to Boyd Oval were rewarded with some exhilarating and top class local women's rugby," Klopper said.
"The day was a great success with supporters and players being welcomed by Medowie's senior men's team that helped put the day together in a safe and family friendly way, spending hours in front of the spit roast to produce the award-winning pork and gravy rolls to feed everyone."
The Marauders men had a bye on the weekend, which is why the Marauders put its hand up to host the women's rounds.
"Medowie rugby club would like to thank everyone who came down and supported us on the day, as well as all our sponsors, who without, not only the day, but also the season would not have been possible," Klopper said.
The final Rams Cup Women's 10's games of the season will be hosted by Wanderers at No. 2 Sportsground on October 10.
Wanderers will face Medowie Marauders, Hamilton will go up against Merewether-Carlton and Maitland against The Waratahs.
In the final game of the men's divisional season, the Marauders will face Newcastle Griffins at Heaton Park on October 10.
