We here in Port Stephens, NSW, Australia are very concerned at the expansion of Hanson's Brandy Hill quarry which will destroy much needed koala habitat.

A very bad look for a company which has adopted a policy of environmental protection and biodiversity.

Koalas are on the verge of extinction in Australia due to habitat loss, especially after our bushfires of last summer.

It would be excellent PR for your company to do its most to save the koala.

I live in Tallean Road, Nelson Bay and it is getting harder and harder to get out of our street onto Stockton Street due to increased traffic.

So I phoned the council to find out how we could try and get a roundabout.

It's also dangerous for the school children getting off the bus and crossing the busy road to get to Tallean Road.

All I had to do was give the Ccouncil my name, phone number and address to put in a roundabout request for the corner of Tallean, Galoola and Stockton Street. If you agree with me and live in Tallean or Galoola please phone the council on 4980 0255 and put in a similar request.

I would like to congratulate the many volunteers who constantly maintain the Shoal Bay walkway and waterfront.

They are forever working on keeping the area clean and well maintained which is very much appreciated.

The NSW Government needs to act on the taking of female crabs.

Sure they are protected if they are carrying eggs, but it should be made illegal for anyone to take female crabs at any time.

The government has protected flathead, it's time for the government to do the same with crabs.

The pedestrian crossing at Salamander shopping centre on Town Centre Circuit, directly in front of the fenced off area where some people park their cars, is an accident waiting to happen.

Despite a bright yellow crossing sign and lines on the road, I have witnessed on many occasions motorists driving - often over the speed limit - straight through the intersection when pedestrians, including myself are stopped, waiting to cross.

When you indicate to the drivers that it's a pedestrian crossing, some drivers look at you like you are in the wrong and continue driving through.

I recently watched in horror as a woman with a physical disability being totally ignored by motorists. I was unfortunately too far away to help.

A solution might be to put a flashing pedestrian sign, similar to the ones installed near school zones, with a speed limit sign nearby.

Also, I would like to add to the Examiner story [October 1] featuring the Tilligerry 'Have a Yarn' project.

I also created a piece of work - accompanied by a laminated article - that was selected for public viewing and it is hanging at Birubi headland near the steps which lead down to the Crest cafe.

I called it 'Birubi' (which means Southern Cross) and it is quite unique. I was surprised and proud to have the piece selected from the many submissions and I invite both visitors and locals to go to Birbui and have a look.
