Following inquiries into the August 26 double fatal collision at the Port Stephens Drive and Salamander Way roundabout, a 44-year-old man was arrested and charged at Raymond Terrace Police Station on Thursday, October 29.

The man was charged with two counts of manslaughter, two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death - drive manner dangerous, two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death - drive speed dangerous, negligent driving - occasioning death, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, negligent driving, not keep left of dividing line and class A motor vehicle exceed speed over 30km/h.

Ron, aged 80, and Robyn, 77, who had retired to Salamander Bay in 2004, died after their car collided with another at the busy Salamander roundabout intersection about 2pm on Wednesday, August 26

Police said the Thomson's Toyota Aurion had been travelling north along Port Stephens Drive and a Holden Commodore, allegedly driven by the Tanilba Bay man, had been travelling west along Salamander Way when they collided at the roundabout.

Mrs Thomson, who had been behind the wheel of the Toyota, and Mr Thomson were treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics, however they both died at the scene.

The Holden driver was also treated at the scene of the collision before being taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening head injury.

Officers from the Crash Investigation Unit attended and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Following his arrest and charges being laid, the Tanilba Bay man was refused bail and appeared before Raymond Terrace Local Court on Thursday.

In court, he was formally refused bail. The man will remain in custody until his next court date in Raymond Terrace Local Court on January 18, 2021.
