The Nelson Bay Gropers men hosted clubs from Newcastle and Lake Macquarie at Strong Oval last Friday for the first of seven rounds in the Hunter Rugby Summer 7s.

The Gropers have entered two men's teams and one women's team into the series. The Medowie Maruaders have one team in each competition.
Nelson Bay's two men's teams went head-to-head in round one last Friday. Nelson Bay Blue also faced University and Nelson Bay Black went up against Merewether Carlton, who looked sharp. Coaches Adam Edwards and Chad Northcott were very happy with their charges' fitness level at this stage of the pre-season and expect the Gropers to be there at the business end of the 7s comp.
The ladies comp was hosted by Mayfield East at Dangar Park. The Gropers were impressive in their two wins over Wanderers and Merewether. Their their speed and ball handling look great so early in the season.
The Waratahs will host round two of the women's competition on Friday at Waratah Park while Merewether Carlton will host the men. Kick off is from 6pm.
THE Newcastle District Golf Association No. 1 Pennant season kicked off last Sunday with Nelson Bay hosting six district clubs in the opening round. The Bay started the season with a 4-2 win over Tanilba Bay Golf Club. Winners for the Bay were James Marshall, Will Semmens, Harry Richards and Chris Drake. For Tanilba, Rob Connell and Col Woodward won their matches.
It was a close contest between Hawks Nest and Muree. Hawks Nest edged out Muree 3 1/2 to 2 1/2. Winners for Muree were Matt Dorney and Tyran Everleigh with John Sullivan squaring his match. Round two will be held at Shortland Waters. In division one, Toronto defeated Pacific Dunes.
NELSON Bay Bowling Club have several players involved in state championships over the coming weeks at the Ettalong Bowling Club.
This week Blake Signal, the current Newcastle and zone 2 champion, will play in the top 16 champion of champions title event over three days. Next week Nelson Bay will be represented by the Newcastle pairs champions Richard Girvan and Shannon Gittoes in the state pairs championship, also played at Ettalong.
Last weekend the major semi final of the club was held with some quality bowls by all teams being played. The final will be played by the duo of Blake Signal and Mark Watts who line up against Richard Girvan and Dave Walters.
RAYMOND Terrace Bowling Club's Kate Matthews, Genevieve Delves and Natasha Van Eldik won the 2020 State Triples Championship against Austral last Friday. Van Eldik was defeated in the State Singles Championship final by Dawn Hayman from St John's Park.
