The event, to run under the auspices of the Newcastle SUP Club, is expected to draw competitors from the local SUP board community and right across the east coast of Australia including men and women from Victoria and far North Queensland.
Steve Thais, president for Newcastle SUP, said the club had been extremely fortunate in securing a major sponsor in Burton Automotive, which operates Port Stephens Toyota.
"Having Burton on board has lifted the profile of the event and helped attract some of Australia's top stand up paddle boarders who have competed internationally both in surf and flat water," he said.
"Athletes such as Terrene Black, Hannah Finlay-Jones, Andrew Cassidy, Keahli Dorries and local boy Josh Stretton are expected to take part.
"We have also had great support from local sponsors for the event of which we really are really grateful."
Mr Thais said that having Teza McKena on board running commentary over the three days would also be a huge asset for all spectators who will be attracted to some great action on the water.
The judging panel will be headed up by the club's own Craig Feenan. "Craig's expertise in competitive stand up paddle boarding will ensure to maintain a level of proficiency throughout the competition."
The club is also excited about introducing the youth events we are keen to encourage young paddlers into the sport by incorporating the 16 years and under boys and 16 years and under girls divisions.
"We are just hoping and praying for perfect surf conditions over Friday and Saturday at One Mile or Birubi beaches and some nice flat water at Shoal Bay beach on the Sunday morning for the distance race."
The people of Port Stephens are being urged to get out and follow the action across the three beaches over the three day carnival.
