Legislation imposing harsh penalties on kangaroo meat or leather importers is before the US House of Representatives.
Animal rights groups have launched a "kangaroos are not shoes" campaign which aims to pressure Nike, Adidas and Puma to stop using the leather in soccer boots.
Six lawmakers from the Democrats, who control Congress and the White House, and two Republicans have backed the bill.
Animal activists have claimed the cull is 10 times more deadly than the annual commercial seal hunt in Canada.
Australia's Agriculture Minister David Littleproud described the suggestion as abhorrent.
"That's an outrageous lie and one that slurs on the actual standing of the industry and farmers themselves," he told 2GB radio on Tueday.
British comedian Ricky Gervais has shared material from the campaign to his 14.5 million Twitter followers.
Australian diplomats in Washington have been forced to dispel misconceptions about the commercial kangaroo industry with the US market worth an estimated $80 million annually.
The minister said shooters were skilled to ensure the kangaroos were humanely euthanised with damaged animals worthless.
"If someone, some 20-odd thousand kilometres away was to impose their will, they should have all the information," Mr Littleproud said.
He's confident the bill won't see the light of day, but is urging politicians and companies to visit Australia for a first-hand look at kangaroo culling.
"Animal cruelty is not accepted by Australian farmers, nor by the industry in any way, shape or form," Mr Littleproud said.
About two million kangaroos are harvested each year from an estimated population of about 50 million.
Mr Littleproud said commercialised and regulated culls delivered better environmental outcomes given droughts often spell devastation for booming kangaroo populations.
"It is more sustainable to be able to do this and shoe companies like Nike and Adidas have been weak to these animal activists," he said.
He accused animal rights campaigners of playing on emotion rather than basing claims on science.
"They've never set foot in western Queensland or western New South Wales and seen how this industry operates."
