A public row between the federal government and the states over delays in the vaccine rollout broke out this week, with Gladys Berejiklian accusing Canberra of leaking "misleading information" on vaccination delays.

NSW had been blindsided by an unexpected bulk delivery of 45,000 vaccines last week, she said, and was then expected to administer them immediately.

She reiterated on Thursday that her government was keen to retain a role in the vaccination rollout beyond its assigned role in phases 1A and 1B.

She told reporters she had written to Mr Morrison on Wednesday evening asking for permission to play this role, but was yet to receive a response.

The prime minister has previously said publicly that he is happy for NSW to take on a greater vaccination load.

NSW is assigned to administer 300,000 vaccinations and Ms Berejiklian said on Wednesday that it had administered 156,000 to date.

"We want to make sure there is a hope of reaching the October deadline (for full vaccination)," she said.

"We have to vaccinate six million citizens in NSW. A vaccination is two shots and not one - it is very different to the flu vaccine, it is not like anything we have experienced.

"The reason why we want to support and assist them is because the quicker people are vaccinated, the quicker we can look forward to the easing of restrictions, to feeling safer and to overseas trips, and I think that's something all of us would welcome."

Ms Berejiklian was irritated on Wednesday that data leaked to News Corp Australia showed NSW had administered only half the 190,000 doses it had received, implying the state was stockpiling.

Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt on Thursday tried to strike a conciliatory tone, blaming "analysis ... done by a particular journalist" for the row and saying Canberra was not "frustrated or grumpy" with states.

"All states and territories have been receiving doses in accordance with their 12-week plan and have received doses entirely in accordance with that ... other than on a couple of occasions," he told the Seven Network.

But Ms Berejiklian blamed federal ministers for the brouhaha and said NSW had done more than the Commonwealth on the vaccine rollout.

Nor was she familiar with Mr Hunt's 12-week plan.

"We are confident if we get more doses of course we will make sure they get out. I reiterate the strong message that we want to help with the rollout," she said.

"When we complete the 300,000, we are offering to do tens of thousands a week more to support their efforts."
